We have become a culture so rooted in church attendance that we have forgotten our identity in Christ. We have forgotten that it is our personal relationship with Jesus that makes us Christians, not what denomination or church we belong to. In order to know God, I must have that personal relationship with him, it must be more than a Sunday morning thing.
The Christian faith was from the very first the personal faith of individuals. This is clearly seen in the declaration of Paul who tells us that after God’s dealings with him on the Damascus road, he did not confer with any human being. Neither did he go up to Jerusalem to them that were apostles before him; but he went into Arabia, then later came back to Damascus (Galatians 1:15-19). Christian individualism lifts a man to a position of sublime independence of all religions of this world.
We are the body of Christ, yes, but before that we are individuals. We are the arm, the eye, the ear, the foot, the hand and all the other individual parts that make the whole. Each one of us has a personal identity in Christ. My faith in Christ is an individual faith, it is between Him and I. After repentance and the filling of the Holy Spirit I am now become part of the body, not the other way around. My way to God is not through church… my way to church is through God!!
Christian individualism is a way of life, not a way of escape. It consists of that which an active believer in Christ does, not what he does not do. Therefore, let no careless, loveless, prayerless, antisocial individual take refuge in it. Let now sports enthusiast, Sunday morning golfer, fisherman, or television addict adopt it in order to free himself for the pursuit of his pleasures. Let not the stingy use it as a way to stop all giving. Let no one take this high and holy position unless his life, from that day on, is to be lived for the glory of Jesus Christ.
Either as a member of the body or an individual, there are certain things I Must Do.
I Must Know God
My aim is to know God. Know Him personally and intimately – grow to know Him more and more as I walk day by day!!
I Must Believe God
- Believe His love for the world.
- Believe His salvation call.
- Believe His promise of eternal life.
- Believe his Word, the Holy Scriptures.
- Believe He is with me no matter the trial or temptation, that He will never forsake me, that He cares for me and is looking after me.
- Believe He has called and commissioned me to proclaim His word to a lost and dying world, a world reeling with desperate need.
I Must Understand God
To know God i must understand He alone is God, the only living and true God, the sovereign Lord and majesty of the universe.
To know God I must understand that God is loving as well as Holy and Righteous – that God is merciful and gracious as well as just. That God will forgive sin as well as judge sin.
Matthew tells us in Chapter seven, “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” Only one person can go through the gate at a time. I will be judged by my fruit, not the fruit of the church, the pastor, or even the body.
I pray that in the days that lie ahead we can begin to grasp the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. When I stand before Him, he will tell me, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant”!!
